The Challenge
Photographing the Alpe di Siusi under a heavy blanket of clouds was a true test of patience and skill. The weather didn’t play along as I’d hoped; the thick, gray sky absorbed the light, muting the colors of the landscape and making it challenging to capture the depth and grandeur of the Dolomites.
Without the usual sharp contrasts between peaks and valleys, every shot required careful composition and thought. I had to shift my approach, focusing on smaller details and capturing the moody, atmospheric beauty of the scene. Instead of waiting for the light to improve, I embraced the muted tones and soft shadows, letting the day’s quiet melancholy guide each shot.
Feelings
Despite the challenges, standing at Alpe di Siusi brought a profound sense of peace and connection to the land. The misty landscape, with grazing cows and endless green pastures fading into the mist, felt timeless and serene. Each click of the camera felt like capturing a small piece of the soul of the Dolomites—a reminder of nature’s vastness and our own small place within it.
Looking through the viewfinder, I felt both humbled and uplifted by the quiet power of these mountains, the ancient forests, and the gentle, grazing animals. There’s a unique beauty in capturing such intimate scenes on a cloudy day, where the mountains feel like they’re whispering secrets through the fog.
